Thai National Theatre
โรงละครแห่งชาติ
The Thai National Theatre, beside the National Museum in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district, is the country’s flagship venue for khon — masked classical dance-drama depicting the Ramakien — plus lakhon dance-drama and traditional Thai music. It closed in 2022 for a multi-year renovation and held test public performances in May 2026 before returning to its regular schedule: khon on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month at 13:30 and 17:00, lakhon on the last Friday at 17:00. Tickets typically run 100–200 THB.
This is a working performance venue, not a sightseeing stop you can wander into any day. Performers here are trained through the Fine Arts Department, and the khon staged is the full traditional form — elaborate gilt masks and costumes, a piphat ensemble of ranat ek (xylophone) and pi (reed instrument), and narration sung rather than spoken by the dancers — rather than the shortened version used at commercial dinner shows aimed at tourists. Seating is unreserved general admission for most shows; arriving 30–45 minutes early secures a better view of the stage.
Insider Tip: Buy tickets at the box office on performance day rather than assuming online booking — availability and booking channels have shifted since the 2026 reopening, so calling the box office (0 2224 1342) ahead of a trip is the safest way to confirm a show is actually running.
Getting there is easy from anywhere in central Bangkok — the theatre sits on Rachini Road next to the Grand Palace and National Museum complex, an easy taxi or a short walk from Tha Chang pier. There’s no strict dress code, but smart-casual is the norm for a formal performance. Pair a visit here with the Grand Palace or Aksra Theatre if you want to compare the classical staging with a more tourist-oriented khon show.
