Vipassana Meditation Centre
สำนักวิปัสสนากรรมฐานวัดชายนา
Wat Chaina’s meditation centre sits on Phatthanakan Thung Prang Road behind Wat Thao Khot, in the city area of Nakhon Si Thammarat — not, as some older listings suggest, out in the Khiri Wong valley near Khao Luang. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily from 8 AM to 4 PM.
The centre has taught Vipassana meditation continuously since 1934, one of the longer-running formal meditation programmes in southern Thailand. It grew out of the same reform movement associated with Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, whose main centre, Suan Mokkh, is in Chaiya further north in the same province — Wat Chaina developed as a related teaching site rather than a formal branch. Successive abbots, including Phra Khru Phawana Chandrakhun, have led instruction for both lay practitioners and ordained monks.
The temple’s ordination hall is the more unusual draw for visitors who aren’t there to meditate: it is a mahaut-style ubosot — a small, windowless chapel — believed to date to the Ayutthaya period, one of relatively few of this older style still standing in the south. Meditation sessions themselves take place in simpler halls nearby, and the atmosphere shifts from quiet study during retreats to a more ordinary temple routine between them.
If you’re passing through rather than joining a structured retreat, treat it as a working meditation centre first and a sightseeing stop second. There is no set programme for drop-in visitors, and instruction is generally conducted in Thai, so contacting the temple ahead of a visit is worth doing if you’re hoping to join a session rather than just look around. It’s also a short trip from Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, if you want to pair the city’s meditation centre with its biggest landmark in one morning.
Insider Tip: The mahaut ordination hall is the most distinctive thing to see if you’re not here for a retreat — ask a resident monk or temple volunteer to point you to it, since it isn’t signposted for tourists.
Watch out: Dress and behave as you would at any active monastery — covered shoulders and knees, quiet voices near the meditation halls, and no wandering into retreat areas uninvited.
