The Tree Tunnel

A 200-metre stretch of Highway 2089 between Muak Lek and Wang Muang runs beneath a canopy of acacia trees (locally krathin narong) whose branches have grown together over the road, shading the asphalt into a green tunnel. It’s a working road in Saraburi’s Wang Muang district, not a park or a managed attraction — no gate, no ticket, no visitor centre. Cars, motorbikes and the occasional truck still use it, which is the main thing to plan around.

The trees line both verges and lean inward, thick enough in places to block direct sun for the full 200 metres. Rainy season (June-October) fills the canopy out fully; in the dry season the shade is thinner but still enough to make the road a few degrees cooler than the open fields either side. Photographers tend to shoot from the road shoulder rather than the centre line, framing the tunnel’s length receding into the distance — the light through the leaves is strongest in the first and last hour of daylight.

Insider Tip: Park in the pull-off before the tunnel and walk the last stretch. Cars driving through slowly to get the shot are the main hazard here, and walking gets you a cleaner photo anyway.

Watch out: This is a winding section of a public road, not a pedestrian zone. Put hazard lights on if you stop nearby, and keep off the road surface itself when vehicles are passing — sightlines through the tunnel are short.

There’s little else built up around the site — it’s a photo stop on a drive through Saraburi’s Muak Lek and Wang Muang districts, easily combined with Muak Lek Reservoir or the sunflower fields further along the same route. Bring water if you’re out at midday; there’s no shop or shade shelter beyond the tunnel itself.

Key Facts:
  • Entry fee: Free (public road)
  • Hours: Roughly 06:00-18:00 daylight hours; no gate or barrier
  • Length: About 200 metres
  • Trees: Acacia (krathin narong), not bamboo
  • Route: Highway 2089, Muak Lek-Wang Muang, Saraburi

Nearby in Wang Muang district: Muak Lek Reservoir and the district’s Sunflower Fields make an easy same-day loop with the tunnel. Wider trip planning for the province is on the Saraburi hub page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Tree Tunnel made of bamboo?
No. The canopy is formed by mature acacia trees (locally krathin narong, Acacia auriculiformis) planted along both verges, whose branches have grown together over the road. It's sometimes photographed and mislabelled as bamboo, which it isn't.
How long is the tunnel and where exactly is it?
About 200 metres of shaded road on Highway 2089, on the Muak Lek-Wang Muang stretch in Saraburi's Wang Muang district. It's a driving/cycling road, not a walking trail.
Is it free to visit?
Yes, it's a public road with no ticket or gate. There's nothing to book — you just pull over and walk the shaded section.
Is it dangerous to stop here?
The tunnel sits on a winding stretch of road. Park well clear of the tunnel itself, put your hazard lights on, and walk in rather than stopping a car in the shaded section — it's a live traffic road, not a closed pedestrian area.
When's the best time to visit?
Rainy season (roughly June-October) gives the densest, greenest canopy. For photos without traffic in the background, aim for early morning or late afternoon on a weekday.
