Chang Puak Camp is a ride-and-show elephant camp in the Nam Noi area of Hat Yai, Songkhla — popular with visitors from Malaysia and the far south. Its activity packages centre on elephant rides and a performance show, with add-ons including a magic show, ATV trails and archery.

We don’t recommend elephant riding or performance camps, and this is one. Elephants at ride-and-show venues are broken to accept riders and perform through a training process built on early separation and fear, riding puts sustained strain on their spines, and a life of show routines is a poor substitute for the space and foraging a captive elephant needs.

If you want to spend time with elephants in Thailand, choose an observation-only, no-riding model instead. Our guide to ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand explains what separates a genuine sanctuary from a repackaged camp and lists vetted options; Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai is the best-known no-riding model in the country and now supports several partner projects elsewhere.

We keep this page so anyone searching for the camp finds an honest account rather than a sales pitch — not as an endorsement.

Key Facts:
  • What it is: A ride-and-show elephant camp, not a sanctuary — we don’t recommend it
  • Why: Riding and performance cause documented welfare harm
  • Ethical alternative: Ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand — observation-only, no riding
  • Location: Nam Noi, Hat Yai, Songkhla

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chang Puak Camp Hat Yai an elephant sanctuary?
No. It's a ride-and-show camp — elephant rides, a performance show, feeding, plus add-ons like ATV and a magic show — not an observation-only rescue sanctuary.
Why doesn't Thai Holiday Guide recommend it?
Elephants at ride-and-show camps are broken to accept riders and perform through a training process built on fear, riding strains their spines, and performance is no substitute for space and foraging. We think there are better, kinder ways to see elephants.
What's an ethical alternative in the south?
Choose an observation-only, no-riding model. Our guide to ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand (/elephant-sanctuaries-thailand/) explains what to look for and lists vetted options across the country, including the south.
Is this related to the other Chang Puak Camps?
Yes — it's the Hat Yai branch of the Chang Puak Camp group, which also runs ride-and-show camps in Chiang Rai, Chiang Khan, Kanchanaburi and Damnoen Saduak. The format is consistent across the group.
