Elephant Nature Park

Chiang Mai

Elephant Nature Park sits in a forested valley 60 km north of Chiang Mai, where rescued elephants roam freely across 250 acres of grassland and riverbank. Founded in 1996 by Sangduen “Lek” Chailert, the sanctuary pioneered the ethical tourism model that has since spread across Thailand.

Visitors spend a full day walking with the herd, preparing fruit baskets, and watching elephants bathe in the Mae Taeng River. There are no rides, no performances, and no bullhooks — just observation at a respectful distance. The park also shelters over 400 rescued dogs and cats, plus water buffalo and other animals.

Insider Tip: Book the single-day visit at least a week ahead — slots fill fast in high season. The “Pamper a Pachyderm” programme gets you closer to the elephants than the standard visit.
