Chulabhorn Phatthana Village 9 was settled by former Malayan Communist Party fighters who laid down their arms under the 1989 Hat Yai Peace Accord and were granted land here in the mountains of Than To, Yala. Later renamed in honour of Princess Chulabhorn, what began as a jungle resettlement is now a quiet ecotourism community on the road toward Bang Lang Dam and the Hala-Bala Wildlife Sanctuary, with a small museum of Communist-era belongings, homestays and forest trails alongside its farms.

Walking through the village reveals meticulously organized agricultural plots where locals cultivate rice, vegetables, and fruit trees using integrated farming methods. The sweet aroma of tropical fruits mingles with the earthy scent of fertile soil as farmers tend to their crops throughout the day. Visitors can observe fish ponds teeming with tilapia and catfish, while chickens roam freely between vegetable gardens in a carefully balanced ecosystem. Community members often welcome curious visitors, sharing knowledge about their sustainable farming practices and demonstrating traditional food preparation techniques. Small workshops showcase local handicrafts, and the village’s processing facilities reveal how raw agricultural products transform into value-added goods that reach markets across southern Thailand.

Genuine warmth characterizes every interaction here, as villagers take pride in sharing their success story with visitors. Children play freely in safe communal spaces while adults work collaboratively on shared projects, creating an atmosphere of purposeful community spirit. The pace moves gently but purposefully, reflecting rural Thai rhythms where work flows naturally with daylight hours and seasonal cycles. This authentic environment allows visitors to experience Thai village life as it actually exists today rather than as a staged cultural performance.

Morning visits between 9:00-11:00 AM offer the best opportunity to see agricultural activities in full swing before the midday heat sets in. The village lies in the Hala-Bala interior of Than To district, reached by road from Yala town or Betong rather than from Satun, along well-maintained rural roads. Comfortable walking shoes and sun protection prove essential for exploring the outdoor areas. Photography is generally welcomed, though asking permission shows respect for the community. This experience provides valuable perspective on rural development initiatives and sustainable agriculture practices that shape modern Thailand’s countryside.
