Bang Lang Dam
เขื่อนบางลาง
Bang Lang Dam was the first multipurpose hydroelectric project in southern Thailand, built across the Pattani River. It is a clay-core rockfill dam 85 metres high with a crest 430 metres long, and its reservoir holds about 1,420 million cubic metres of water. Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great and Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, accompanied by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, presided over the opening on 27 September 1981. A viewpoint above the dam looks out over the reservoir and the surrounding mountains.
What to Expect
The reservoir sits among forested hills next to Bang Lang National Park, and the dam is managed by EGAT. The main draw is the viewpoint over the water and mountains; the surrounding area is remote and far quieter than Thailand’s coastal attractions. As this is the deep South, check current local travel advice before visiting.
