Kaeng Hin Khan is a stretch of rapids on the Mekong River itself — not a tributary — at Ban Hin Khan in Khok San subdistrict, Chanuman district, Amnat Charoen, directly on the Thai-Lao border. It’s a dry-season attraction: the rock channels and basins only show above the waterline roughly February to May, when the Mekong drops low enough to expose them. During the rainy season the same stretch of river is simply water.

The name comes from the shape — “hin khan” describes a basin or pan-like hollow, and centuries of the Mekong grinding over the rock have carved exactly that: smooth, rounded channels and pools in the stone, some locals compare to giant basins. When the water’s low, you can walk out across the exposed rock and look across the river to Laos on the opposite bank. Fishermen work the rapids for Mekong fish — pla nang and other river species — and sell the catch fresh along the access road into the village, a genuine slice of riverside Mekong life rather than a staged tourist stop.

The site is about 13 km south of Chanuman’s district office, and roughly 70-75 km from Amnat Charoen town — the region borders Ubon Ratchathani’s Khemarat district to the south, and a direct van route runs between Ubon Ratchathani and Chanuman via Khemarat if you’re coming from that direction instead.

Insider Tip: Time your visit for the dry season (February-May) — arrive off-season and there’s no rapids to see, just a normal river.

Watch out: The exposed rock is uneven and can be slick near the waterline. There’s no railing or marked path, so watch your footing, especially with kids.
