Kaeng Tang Lang is a stretch of Mekong River rapids at Ban Si Somboon in Chanuman subdistrict, Chanuman district, Amnat Charoen — on the Mekong itself, not the Mun River as some older listings claim (the Mun is a separate river that joins the Mekong much further south, at Khong Chiam). Like the district’s other rapids, it’s a dry-season sight: exposed sandbars and rock channels appear roughly February to May when the river runs low, and disappear underwater once the rains arrive.

The village sits on a genuinely scenic bend of the river, with sandy stretches and rock outcrops visible in the dry months and small food stalls selling grilled Mekong fish. Locals fish these waters for a living, and the riverside walk gives a straightforward, unstaged look at how a Mekong border village runs day to day rather than a curated viewpoint. Photographers get the best light early — morning haze over the water, the Lao bank visible across the river — before the heat and glare set in by mid-morning.

We can’t independently verify the “Praying Mantis Rapids” translation attached to this site in some older tourism copy — no primary source ties the name “Tang Lang” to that meaning, so we’ve dropped the claim rather than repeat an unconfirmed one.

Insider Tip: Visit February-May. Outside the dry season there’s simply a river here, not the rapids and sandbars that make the trip worthwhile.

Watch out: The exposed riverbed can be slippery close to the waterline, and there’s no marked path or railing — take care with footing, especially with children.

Key Facts:
  • Entry: Free, no fixed gate or hours
  • Best time: February-May (dry season, when rapids and sandbars are exposed)
  • River: The Mekong itself — not the Mun River
  • Getting there: ~70-75 km from Amnat Charoen town; a direct van route also runs from Ubon Ratchathani via Khemarat
  • Nearby: Kaeng Hin Khan and Kaeng Khan Sung, similar Mekong rapids in the same district

Pair the visit with Kaeng Hin Khan and Kaeng Khan Sung, the district’s other Mekong rapids, or the Mekong Scenic Point for a wider river view.
