Mekong Scenic Point
จุดชมวิวทิวทัศน์ริมโขง
Mekong Scenic Point is an elevated riverside lookout in Chanuman subdistrict, Amnat Charoen, part of the roughly 38 km of Mekong riverbank that runs through Chanuman district along the Lao border. Unlike the district’s exposed rock-shelf rapids, this is a fixed viewpoint above the water rather than somewhere you walk out onto the riverbed — the draw is the view down over the river and across to Laos, not a rock formation to explore up close.
Entry is free and there’s no ticket booth or fixed gate — like the district’s other riverside stops, it’s an open access point rather than a managed attraction. The Mekong itself changes character through the year: high, fast and the colour of milky coffee during the rainy season from roughly June to October, then dropping and calming through the cool dry months from November to February, which is also when Isan’s air is clearest and the far bank shows up sharpest.
Morning is the best window, when mist sometimes sits on the water and village life along the bank — fishing boats setting out, water buffalo at the shallows — is more active than at midday. There’s little built infrastructure at the viewpoint itself, so this suits a short stop rather than a half-day outing.
Watch out: Amnat Charoen has essentially no public transport between sights — you need your own car or motorbike to reach Chanuman district from the provincial town, since no songthaew service runs this route.
Insider Tip: Combine the stop with Kaeng Khan Sung or Kaeng Hin Khan, both dry-season Mekong rapids a short drive away in the same district — between the elevated view here and the exposed rock shelves there, you get the two different ways this stretch of river shows itself.
Getting here means driving Highway 212 from Amnat Charoen town toward Chanuman, then local roads into Chanuman subdistrict itself — allow around ninety minutes each way on rural roads. Bring cash, since nothing in this part of the district takes cards, along with sun protection for a viewpoint with little shade.
