Khao Chong Krachok is the limestone karst that rises straight out of Prachuap Khiri Khan town, its name meaning “Mirror Mountain” for the way the peak splits to reflect light through a gap near the summit. A concrete stairway of 396 steps climbs from the base to Wat Thammikaram, an active temple built into the rock at the top. Entry is free.
The stairway is exposed the whole way up — no forest canopy, just open concrete and rock — so the climb is more about heat management than technical difficulty. Handrails run alongside most sections, useful given how steep the upper third gets. Small shrines and Buddha images are set into alcoves along the route, and prayer flags mark the resting points where most climbers pause. At the top, Wat Thammikaram houses a revered Buddha footprint inside the temple building, and the terrace outside opens onto a full sweep of Prachuap Bay: the fishing fleet moored below, the curve of the bay running north toward Ao Manao, and on a clear day the hills of Myanmar visible across the gulf to the west.
Watch out: The long-tailed macaques living on the mountain are a genuine hazard, not a photo opportunity. They’re used to tourists and will snatch food, drink bottles, sunglasses, and anything dangling from a bag zip. Don’t feed them, don’t make eye contact, and keep bags zipped and held in front of you rather than slung loosely over one shoulder.
Insider Tip: Go before 8 AM. The stairway faces east with almost no shade, and by mid-morning the concrete radiates heat back at you on the way down as much as the sun hits you on the way up. An early climb also means fewer macaques competing over the tour-bus crowds that arrive later.
- Entry fee: Free
- Steps: 396, concrete stairway to Wat Thammikaram
- Climb time: 20-30 minutes up, less coming down
- Hazard: Wild macaques — secure food, drinks, and loose bag items
- Getting there: Walking distance from Prachuap Khiri Khan town centre, at the northern end of the bay
Bring water — there’s nowhere to buy any on the stairway itself — and wear shoes with real grip rather than sandals, since the steps get slick with dust and monkey traffic. Modest dress is expected at the temple on top: covered shoulders and knees. The whole outing, walk up, look around, walk down, takes under an hour, which makes it an easy add-on to a morning in Prachuap Khiri Khan before the heat sets in properly.
