Trok Rong Ya Walking Street, Uthai Thani

Uthai Thani Reviewed Jul 2026
Saturday 16:00-20:00
Entry Free

Trok Rong Ya Walking Street runs through a former opium-trading alley in Uthai Thani town, open only on Saturdays, 16:00 to 20:00. Wooden shophouses along the roughly 150-metre lane house food stalls, antique sellers and a handful of houses open for viewing. Entry is free.

Experience

The alley takes its name from its original purpose: in the early 20th century this was a residential pocket for Chinese immigrants that doubled as a licensed opium-smoking zone, and locals still call it “Rong Ya Alley” — rong ya roughly translates to “drug den.” What was once a functional back-street has become the town’s weekend showcase for its wooden shophouse architecture, largely unrestored and still standing after a century.

Food is the main draw on a Saturday evening. Stalls sell khanom tang taek — a coconut-and-sugar pancake associated with the province — alongside khao kriap pak mo (steamed rice dumplings), khanom bueng yuan (a savoury crepe), fish balls, pork satay, and pla ru, a local fermented fish. Between the food stalls, vendors lay out antique utensils, old coins and household collectibles, and several of the historic wooden houses along the lane open their doors for visitors to look through — a rarer offering than the food and shopping most Thai walking streets share. For more of the town’s old-quarter history, Ancient Uthaithani and the Local History and Cultural Museum of Uthai Thani Province are both a short trip away.

Atmosphere & Timing

The street only exists as a walking street for four hours a week. Outside that Saturday window it’s a quiet residential lane with little to see, so timing the visit matters more here than at markets that run daily. Early evening brings the biggest crowds as the heat drops and stalls light up; by 19:30 some vendors are already packing up.

Insider Tip: Arrive close to 16:00 when stalls are setting up — you get first pick of the food without the crowds, and the wooden houses are easier to photograph before the lane fills.

Practical

Watch out: Bring cash in small notes. Most stalls here don’t take cards, and vendors along a 150-metre lane rarely have change for large bills.
