Surin Beach, in Choeng Thale on Phuket’s west coast, isn’t quite the beach-club destination its reputation still suggests. Local authorities cleared the beachfront restaurants and clubs in April 2025 — the second such sweep in a decade, after a similar clearout in 2016 removed the same wave of businesses. Catch Beach Club, long Surin’s signature venue, relocated to Bang Tao Beach afterward. Tukta, built on the rocks rather than the sand, was exempt from the clearance and still operates today.
What’s left is a quieter stretch of sand backed by coconut and casuarina trees rather than decking and sunbeds. Upscale resorts still ring the Surin area inland — Twinpalms Phuket, The Surin Phuket, and the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket Surin Beach among them — so the neighborhood retains its higher-end character even with the beachfront itself stripped back. Small, informal food vendors have crept back in the past after previous clearouts, so expect a scattering of casual options rather than the full restaurant row that used to line the beach.
Watch out: If you’re picturing Surin as a full-day beach-club destination with loungers, cocktails, and DJ sets on the sand, that scene has moved to Bang Tao. Surin today suits a morning swim and a walk more than an all-day stay.
The atmosphere now leans toward relaxed and low-key rather than see-and-be-seen. Without the rows of clubs, the beach functions best as a swimming and sunset stop — locals and inland-resort guests rather than a beach-club crowd. It’s the kind of change worth knowing before you arrive with a full day planned around beachfront service.
Safety Tip: Swim conditions are calmest November through April. During the May-October monsoon, Phuket’s Andaman-side beaches — Surin included — see stronger currents and occasional rip tides. Follow the flag system: green or yellow to swim, red to stay out, no matter how the water looks from the shore.
Reach Surin Beach by taxi, rental car, or motorbike via Choeng Thale — there’s no direct public bus route to the beachfront itself. For a change of scenery close by, Laem Sing, a small viewpoint cove just north along the same stretch of coast, makes an easy add-on to a Surin Beach visit.
