Two Heroines Monument

Entry Free

The Two Heroines Monument stands on a busy roundabout on Thepkasattri Road in Si Sunthon, Thalang district — Phuket’s old capital before Phuket Town took over that role. The bronze statues honour Thao Thep Kasattri (Lady Chan) and Thao Si Sunthon (Lady Mook), two sisters credited with leading Thalang’s defenders against a Burmese siege in 1785, part of what’s known in Thai history as the Nine Armies War during King Rama I’s reign. The town held, and the sisters became one of Phuket’s most enduring historical symbols.

The statues themselves were erected in 1966, cast by artists from Bangkok’s Fine Arts Department, and officially opened by King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit on 23 May 1967. They depict the two women mid-stride in traditional dress, set on a raised plaza at the centre of the roundabout with informational plaques in Thai and English explaining the 1785 siege. It’s a genuinely central Phuket landmark — most drivers heading between the airport and the island’s west-coast beaches pass it without stopping, which is part of why it rewards the few minutes it takes to actually get out and look.

Watch out: The monument sits on a live traffic roundabout, not a pedestrian plaza. Crossing to the central island takes care at any time of day, and it’s genuinely easier and safer outside the morning and evening rush.

Insider Tip: Visit early morning (before roughly 8:30am) or early evening (after about 5:30pm) — traffic on the roundabout thins out noticeably at both ends of the day, making the crossing to the statues far less stressful and the light better for photos.

Dress and behave respectfully, as with any memorial — locals regularly leave flowers and incense here. It works best as a short stop rather than a destination in itself, particularly combined with the nearby Thalang National Museum, which covers the same history in far more depth for a small entry fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who does the Two Heroines Monument commemorate?
Thao Thep Kasattri (Lady Chan) and Thao Si Sunthon (Lady Mook), who led Thalang's defenders against a Burmese siege in 1785, part of the Nine Armies War in the reign of King Rama I. Phuket was known as Thalang at the time, and the town held.
When was the monument built?
The bronze statues were erected in 1966, cast by artists from Bangkok's Fine Arts Department. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit officially opened it on 23 May 1967.
Is it free to visit?
Yes, there's no entrance fee — it's a public monument on a traffic roundabout, open at any time.
Why is it hard to get close to the statues?
The monument sits in the middle of a genuinely busy roundabout on Thepkasattri Road, so reaching the central island on foot means crossing live traffic. Early morning (before about 8:30am) or evening (after 5:30pm) both have noticeably lighter traffic than the middle of the day.
Is there more history nearby?
Thalang National Museum sits about 300 metres away and covers the same 1785 siege in more depth, alongside the island's tin-mining history — unlike the free monument, it charges a small entry fee.
