Experience Real Bangkok by Bike
Availability checked
Most people’s mental image of Bangkok is traffic. Three hours on a bike rewrites that pretty quickly, because the backstreets of Chinatown and the quiet lanes of Thonburi barely have cars on them. Instead you roll past corner shrines, stilt houses over khlongs, vendors pushing carts, and elderly men playing checkers under the banyan trees. Co van Kessel have been running this route for decades and it remains the best way to stitch together Bangkok’s old-town residential side in an afternoon.
The tour starts at their office on the ground floor of River City Bangkok, where you pick up a bike and a helmet. The route threads through the narrow alleyways of Chinatown (too narrow for cars, which is the whole point), drops down to the river, and uses a local ferry to cross to Thonburi, the quieter west bank. On the Thonburi side you cycle past wooden houses, Muslim neighbourhoods, small temples and vegetable gardens, with a guide calling out what you’re passing and stopping for snacks and refreshing drinks along the way. Bottled water, snacks, the ferry crossing and optional helmets are included.
Groups run up to 15 but usually go smaller. The pace is easy on flat ground and you don’t need to be a cyclist, just able to balance on a city bike for a couple of hours. Wear closed shoes, light layers and some sun cover, and expect to sweat. Morning sessions are noticeably cooler than afternoon. Hotel pickup isn’t included but River City is a straightforward Grab or BTS-plus-taxi hop from central hotels.
Rain is the main wildcard in May to October. They’ll run in light rain but heavy storms can cancel, and the free cancellation policy keeps the risk low. Complete beginners might find the traffic crossings stressful, but anyone comfortable on a bike will be fine, and the small-group format means no one gets left behind.
Itinerary
Stop
Starting in the heart of Chinatown, our bike ride explores its frenetic market environment. Winding through narrow alleyways, our senses come alive with the sights, sounds, and smells of a community in motion. We’ll pass by shophouses selling everything from Buddhist amulets to recycled truck engines. Locals worshiping at hidden temples, ritual paper burnings, and the omnipresent spirit house display evidence of a culture centuries in the making.
