Long Neck Village, Silver Temple & Chiang Mai Top Cultural Sites
Availability checked
Four hours in a red songthaew — the converted open-back pickup truck that still serves as shared transport around Chiang Mai — covers three of the city’s most distinctive temples plus a visit to a Karen Padaung community, with pickup from hotels inside the Old City or just outside the centre. Not air-conditioned, but that’s the authentic local ride rather than a tourist van.
Wat Chedi Luang is first — the massive 15th-century stupa that once housed the Emerald Buddha before it moved to Bangkok, with its partially ruined upper section giving the temple its distinctive silhouette. Wat Phra Singh is the city’s most sacred temple, with Lanna-style architecture and gleaming golden chedis worth a slow look. Wat Sri Suphan’s Silver Temple is the quiet highlight — the exterior is entirely covered in intricate hand-beaten silver, tin, and aluminium panels by local silversmiths. The final stop is a Karen Padaung village outside the city, home to the community known for the traditional brass neck rings worn by the women, where the 100 THB entry is the source of the community’s income from visitors.
Four hours is tight but enough for surface visits to each site. Entrance fees are separate: 50 THB at each of the three temples, plus 100 THB at the village. Women visiting Wat Sri Suphan’s main hall aren’t allowed inside (a traditional rule); the exterior is worth the visit alone. Meeting point if you’re outside the pickup area is in front of Burger King at Tha Pae Gate. Group capped at 10. Temple dress code applies — shoulders and knees covered. The village visit is controversial for some travellers; do some reading before booking to decide where you stand on it.
