Ban Huai Kon Kao Battlefield Memorial

Ban Huai Kon Kao Battlefield Memorial preserves the site of one of the deadliest clashes of Thailand’s communist insurgency. On 9 April 1975, roughly 200 fighters of the Communist Party of Thailand attacked an army outpost here in Chaloem Phra Kiat district, Nan; the 69 soldiers of the Royal Thai Army’s 21st Infantry Battalion defending it held the position, but 17 were killed. Entry to the memorial is free. It sits at 585 metres elevation near the Nan-Laos border, about 138 km — roughly a two-hour drive — from Nan town.

The base has been left largely as it was. Original trenches and fighting positions cut into the hillside are still walkable, alongside a display of the weapons used in the battle and markers showing where individual soldiers fell. Plaques name the 17 dead, and interpretive signage — mostly Thai, with some English — sets out how the attack unfolded and why this ridge mattered strategically: it commanded the approach from the border and the surrounding valleys, which is plain the moment you look out from the position.

Watch out: This is an active war memorial and, in effect, a grave site — several of the markers sit where soldiers actually died. Loud behaviour or treating it as a casual photo backdrop reads badly to Thai visitors, some of whom come specifically to pay respects to relatives or veterans.

The remoteness is part of the experience. Mountain roads wind the whole way from Nan town, cutting through forested ridgelines with few settlements in between, and the elevation keeps the air noticeably cooler than in the valley below. Little disturbs the quiet beyond wind and birdsong, which suits a site built around memory rather than spectacle.

Insider Tip: Combine the trip with the Royal Project Phu Phayak, a royally initiated highland agriculture station about 13 km away in the same district — it turns a long drive into a fuller day out rather than a there-and-back detour.

Key Facts:
  • Entry fee: Free
  • What happened: ~200 CPT insurgents attacked on 9 April 1975; 17 of 69 defending soldiers (21st Infantry Battalion) were killed
  • Elevation: 585 m above sea level
  • Distance from Nan town: ~138 km, about 2 hours by car
  • On-site: Original trenches, weapons display, casualty markers and plaques

Getting there requires your own vehicle or a hired driver — there’s no public transport this far into Chaloem Phra Kiat district. The roads are paved but narrow and winding, so allow extra time and avoid driving after dark or during heavy rain, when visibility on the mountain bends drops fast. Bring water and wear closed shoes; the ground around the trenches is uneven and there’s no shade over most of the site. For a wider view of the district’s insurgency-era history, the Civil Police Soldier Monument in neighbouring Thung Chang district covers the same conflict from a different angle, with its own small military museum.
