Chatuchak Park

Chatuchak Park is the 75-acre public park next to Bangkok’s Chatuchak Weekend Market — not the market itself. It opened in 1975 on former State Railway of Thailand land to mark King Bhumibol’s sixtieth birthday, and today it’s built around an artificial lake criss-crossed by footbridges. Entry is free, open daily 04:00-21:00.

A paved loop circles the lake, used for jogging, cycling and the informal group exercise classes that gather most mornings and evenings. Asian water monitor lizards live in and around the ponds and turn up regularly along the banks — harmless to people, but keep dogs on a lead and don’t feed them. Landmarks from the park’s railway-land past remain scattered through it, including a clock tower and a disused train museum, alongside sculpture gifts from other ASEAN countries and a garden planted for Princess Sirindhorn’s birthday anniversary, dotted along the paths.

Chatuchak Park connects on foot to two neighbouring green spaces across Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road — Queen Sirikit Park and Wachirabenchathat Park, also called Rot Fai or Railway Park after the rail yard it replaced — via pedestrian bridges, so a longer walk or ride can string all three together. The whole cluster sits directly on top of Chatuchak Park MRT station, which shares its name with the park rather than the market next door.

Early morning, before 8am, is the coolest and least crowded window, when the exercise crowd thins out and the shade from the mature trees still holds the night’s cool air. Chatuchak Weekend Market runs only Saturday and Sunday, 09:00-18:00, so if you’re combining a market trip with the park, plan to walk through the park either before the stalls open or after the afternoon heat has passed.

Insider Tip: Skip the market’s outer lanes on a hot afternoon and cut through the park instead — the lake path is shaded and several degrees cooler than the market’s covered alleys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chatuchak Park the same as Chatuchak Weekend Market?
No. The park is a free 75-acre green space with a lake and jogging paths; the market is the separate, paid-stall shopping area next door, open only Saturday and Sunday. They share a name and a boundary, not a building.
Is Chatuchak Park free to enter?
Yes, there's no admission fee, and it's open daily, not just on market weekends.
What are the monitor lizards like at Chatuchak Park?
Asian water monitor lizards live around the park's ponds and are commonly seen basking on the banks or swimming. They're generally not aggressive toward people, but keep a respectful distance and don't offer food.
What time does Chatuchak Park open and close?
Daily from 4am to 9pm — considerably longer hours than the weekend market, which runs 9am-6pm Saturday and Sunday only.
Can you walk from Chatuchak Park to other parks nearby?
Yes. Pedestrian bridges over Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road connect it to Queen Sirikit Park and Wachirabenchathat Park (also known as Rot Fai or Railway Park), so the three can be combined into one longer walk or cycle.
