Khao Chang Phueak is the highest peak of Thong Pha Phum National Park in western Kanchanaburi, rising to about 1,249 metres near the Myanmar border. The trail to the summit runs through a mix of sparse forest and open grassland, with the exposed Kom Meed (“razor”) ridge — a narrow, knife-edge stretch — as its most memorable and vertigo-inducing section. From the top you get a 360-degree view over the surrounding hills.

This is a serious hike, not a viewpoint you can drive to: the route is about 8 km each way and takes roughly six hours on foot from Ban I Tong, done as an overnight 2-day-1-night trip with a camp at or near the summit. The national park caps numbers at 60 people per day, requires climbers to be 13-70 years old, and requires a park guide (around 900 baht per group) and, if needed, a porter (around 900 baht) arranged in advance. The park rents tents and sleeping gear; there is no electricity, shop or other facility at the top.

Watch out: the climb only runs on a fixed cool-season window the park announces each year — recent seasons have opened around 24 November and closed 31 January. Booking for the season opens shortly before it starts, and the 60-person daily cap fills fast on weekends, so reserve well ahead if you want a specific date.

Cool mornings, mist and the chance of a sea of cloud over the ridgelines are the payoff for climbing in this window — the grassland turns golden and the air is noticeably cooler than the Kanchanaburi lowlands. Pack warm layers despite the tropical setting; overnight temperatures near the summit can drop close to freezing in January.

Entry is 200 baht for foreign adults (40 baht for Thais; 100/20 baht for children). Thong Pha Phum National Park is about 175 km from Mueang Kanchanaburi via Highway 323, with the trailhead at Ban I Tong beyond the park headquarters near Pilok. Bring a hat, long sleeves, sunglasses, a torch and sturdy shoes, and book ahead through the park office (0 3453 2114).

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Khao Chang Phueak open for climbing?
Only during the cool season — the park announces exact dates each year, typically running from late November to the end of January. It's closed the rest of the year, including the whole rainy season.
How much does it cost?
Park entry is 200 THB for foreign adults and 40 THB for Thai adults (100/20 THB for children), plus a compulsory guide fee of around 900 THB per group and a porter fee of around 900 THB if you want one to carry gear.
How hard is the trek?
It's roughly 8 km each way and takes about six hours on foot from the Ban I Tong trailhead, done as an overnight 2-day-1-night trip with a camp near the summit — not something to attempt in a day.
What is the Kom Meed ridge?
A narrow, exposed section of trail near the summit — a genuine knife-edge stretch with drop-offs on both sides, the part of the hike most people remember (and some find unnerving).
Is there an age limit?
Yes — the park requires climbers to be between 13 and 70 years old, partly because of the ridge section and the overnight camping at altitude.
