Ban Ton Pho and Ban Nong Phai, two adjoining villages in Nakhon Luang district, have forged Thai-style knives for close to two centuries. Together they’re known as the Aranyik knife villages — the name comes from a market roughly 3 km away in Tha Reua district where the blades were traditionally sold, not from the villages’ own location. Entry is free, and forges typically run daily from around 08:00 to 17:00.

The villages work in household-scale workshops rather than a single visitor centre, so what you see depends on which forges happen to be firing that day. Steel is heated, hammered into shape, quenched, and ground on stone wheels by hand — the hammering carries across the lane between houses, and the smell of hot metal and charcoal smoke sits over the workshops closest to the road. Blades range from plain kitchen knives to larger ceremonial pieces with decorated handles. Several workshops sell finished knives directly, and some will let visitors take a turn at the anvil under supervision if things aren’t too busy.

Insider Tip: Morning is when the most forges are active — by early afternoon some workshops pause for the heat. If a household’s forge is quiet when you arrive, it’s worth walking on to the next house rather than assuming the whole village has stopped for the day.

This is domestic, working craft rather than a curated attraction: children play in the yards while parents work, and knife-making sits alongside ordinary village life rather than being staged for cameras. Photographing the forges is generally fine, but ask before photographing people directly — it’s someone’s home and workplace, not a performance.

Watch out: There’s no ticket booth, signage in English is limited, and not every workshop is set up for casual drop-ins — a few households forge for wholesale buyers rather than passing visitors. Asking politely (or going with a Thai-speaking driver) makes it easier to find a workshop that’s happy to show you around.

Key Facts:
  • Entry: Free
  • Hours: Daily, roughly 08:00-17:00 (forges vary by household)
  • Villages: Ban Ton Pho and Ban Nong Phai, Tha Chang subdistrict, Nakhon Luang district
  • Distance from Ayutthaya old town: ~20 km, 25-30 minute drive
  • What to bring: Cash if you plan to buy a knife; most workshops don’t take cards

Prasat Nakhon Luang, a Rama IV-era royal residence a few kilometres away in the same district, makes an easy pairing for a half-day loop out from Ayutthaya.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are they called the Aranyik knife villages if they're not in Aranyik?
The knives take their name from a market roughly 3 km away in Tha Reua district that traded them generations ago. The forges themselves sit in two villages, Ban Ton Pho and Ban Nong Phai, in Tha Chang subdistrict, Nakhon Luang district — buyers just kept calling the blades Aranyik knives after where they were sold, and the name stuck to the villages that made them.
Is it free to visit?
Yes. There's no entry fee to walk through the villages and watch the forges work, daily from around 08:00 to 17:00.
Can I buy a knife directly from the makers?
Yes — knives are sold on the spot by the workshop that forged them, from everyday kitchen blades to larger ceremonial pieces. Prices vary by size, steel, and handle work, so it's worth asking a couple of workshops before buying.
How far is it from Ayutthaya's old town?
About 20 km northeast of the historic centre, roughly a 25-30 minute drive through Nakhon Luang district. There's no direct public transport, so a car, taxi, or rented motorbike is the practical way in.
Is this a staged demonstration or a working village?
A working village. Forges operate as household businesses, not a set-piece show for tour groups, so what you see on a given morning depends on which workshops happen to be running.
