HTMS Chakri Naruebet

เรือรบหลวงจักรีนฤเบศร

Entry Free

Thailand’s only aircraft carrier — and Southeast Asia’s smallest — sits moored at Chuk Samet Pier inside the Sattahip Naval Base, Sattahip district, roughly 40 km south of central Pattaya. HTMS Chakri Naruebet is a working vessel of the Royal Thai Navy, and the navy opens sections of it to the public free of charge, daily 09:00-17:00 — with one catch: visits are suspended during the 09:00-12:00 slot on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so plan around that if you’re set on a specific day.

The ship was built by Bazán in Spain, based on the design of the Spanish Navy’s Príncipe de Asturias, and entered service on 20 March 1997 at 182.6 metres long — often cited as the smallest aircraft carrier in active naval service anywhere in the world, not just the region. It still carries out humanitarian and disaster-relief missions alongside its training role, most visibly during flood-response operations over the years.

On board, the main draw is the flight deck, with a changing lineup of aircraft and naval equipment on display, along with designated areas covering the ship’s role in the fleet. This is still an active naval installation, not a museum built for tourists, so expect a working-base atmosphere rather than a polished exhibition — uniformed personnel about their duties, some areas cordoned off, and a formality to the whole visit that’s different from a typical sightseeing stop.

It’s an unusual add-on to a Sattahip or Pattaya-area itinerary precisely because it isn’t packaged for tourists. Bring photo ID; smart casual dress and no smoking are expected on a government site. Public transport to the naval base is limited, so a private car, taxi, or organized transfer is the practical way in. There’s no ticket booth or fixed tour route — you walk the open sections at your own pace, and most visitors spend somewhere between an hour and ninety minutes aboard before heading back to the pier.

Watch out: Don’t plan a Wednesday or Thursday morning visit without checking first — the 09:00-12:00 closure on those two days catches people out. Afternoons on those days are generally fine.

Insider Tip: Sattahip has a handful of other navy-adjacent stops worth combining with the carrier — Wat Sattahip and the Royal Thai Navy Sea Turtle Conservation Center are both a short drive away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HTMS Chakri Naruebet open every day?
It's open daily 09:00-17:00, but visits are suspended during the 09:00-12:00 morning slot on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Afternoons on those two days are generally unaffected.
Do I need to book in advance?
Individual visitors can generally walk in during opening hours — it's a working navy base rather than a ticketed attraction, so bring photo ID. Larger groups are better off checking with the naval base ahead of a visit.
How much does it cost to visit?
Nothing — entry is free.
What can you actually see on board?
The flight deck and a range of aircraft and naval equipment on display, plus designated areas of the ship. It's a working warship and naval base, so not every compartment is open to the public.
Where exactly is it?
Chuk Samet Pier at the Sattahip Naval Base, Sattahip district, Chonburi province — about 40 km south of central Pattaya, not in Pattaya itself.
