Kalim Beach

Patong Beach Reviewed Jul 2026
Entry Free

Kalim Beach is the quiet northern tail of Patong, separated from the main strip by a rocky headland — not, despite some older listings, a Kamala beach. The address sits in Patong’s own Pa Tong subdistrict, and the walk from Bangla Road takes about 15 minutes. What you get for the short distance is a coarse sand-and-pebble shoreline backed by boulders, with none of Patong’s beach-vendor rows and a noticeably calmer pace.

Conditions split sharply by season. From November to April, the sea lies flat enough for swimming, though the rocky, coral-scattered bottom near shore rewards water shoes over bare feet — this isn’t a smooth sand-bottom beach. From May to October, the same coastline turns into Phuket’s best-known reef break: fast, hollow waves that can hold overhead size on the biggest monsoon swells, breaking over shallow rock and coral. That’s a serious wave for experienced surfers only, not a learner break — the shallow reef punishes mistakes.

A handful of seafood restaurants and open-air bars line the road above the beach, serving grilled fish and cold Chang with a view across to Patong Bay, and they’re the main reason people linger here past sunset. Facilities are otherwise thin: no rows of sunbeds, no watersports touts, and only a short stretch of shade from the casuarina trees along the back of the beach.

Watch out: The reef and rocks that make Kalim a surf spot also make it a swimming hazard once the swell is up — check conditions before wading in during the wet season, and never surf here without prior reef-break experience.

Insider Tip: Come for sunset dinner even if you’re not swimming or surfing — the restaurants along Kalim’s coast road get the same sea view as Patong’s beachfront places for a fraction of the crowd and noise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kalim Beach part of Patong or Kamala?
Patong. Kalim is the quiet northern tail of Patong Beach, separated from the main strip by a rocky headland, and its address falls in Patong's own Pa Tong subdistrict — not Kamala, which is a separate bay another 15-20 minutes further north.
Can you swim at Kalim Beach?
Swimming works during the dry season (November-April) when the sea is calm, but the rocky, coral-strewn bottom near shore makes it less forgiving than a sandy beach. During the May-October monsoon, waves and currents pick up and it turns into a surf spot rather than a swimming one.
Is Kalim Beach good for surfing?
For experienced surfers, yes — it's widely rated Phuket's best reef break, with fast, hollow waves that hold overhead size on the biggest monsoon swells (roughly May-October). The wave breaks over shallow coral and rock, so it's not a spot for beginners.
How far is Kalim from central Patong?
About 1-2 km, roughly a 5-minute drive, 15-minute walk, or short tuk-tuk ride from Patong's Bangla Road area. It's close enough to use Patong's restaurants and transport while sleeping somewhere quieter.
Are there facilities at Kalim Beach?
Limited compared to Patong proper — a handful of seafood restaurants and beach bars along the road, but no sunbed rows or organised watersports outfits. Bring your own reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes for the rocks.
