Kalim Beach is the quiet northern tail of Patong, separated from the main strip by a rocky headland — not, despite some older listings, a Kamala beach. The address sits in Patong’s own Pa Tong subdistrict, and the walk from Bangla Road takes about 15 minutes. What you get for the short distance is a coarse sand-and-pebble shoreline backed by boulders, with none of Patong’s beach-vendor rows and a noticeably calmer pace.
Conditions split sharply by season. From November to April, the sea lies flat enough for swimming, though the rocky, coral-scattered bottom near shore rewards water shoes over bare feet — this isn’t a smooth sand-bottom beach. From May to October, the same coastline turns into Phuket’s best-known reef break: fast, hollow waves that can hold overhead size on the biggest monsoon swells, breaking over shallow rock and coral. That’s a serious wave for experienced surfers only, not a learner break — the shallow reef punishes mistakes.
A handful of seafood restaurants and open-air bars line the road above the beach, serving grilled fish and cold Chang with a view across to Patong Bay, and they’re the main reason people linger here past sunset. Facilities are otherwise thin: no rows of sunbeds, no watersports touts, and only a short stretch of shade from the casuarina trees along the back of the beach.
Watch out: The reef and rocks that make Kalim a surf spot also make it a swimming hazard once the swell is up — check conditions before wading in during the wet season, and never surf here without prior reef-break experience.
Insider Tip: Come for sunset dinner even if you’re not swimming or surfing — the restaurants along Kalim’s coast road get the same sea view as Patong’s beachfront places for a fraction of the crowd and noise.
