Khao Kaen Chan
เขาแก่นจันทน์
Khao Kaen Chan is a 141-metre hill about 2 km from central Ratchaburi, just off Phetkasem Road, with a sealed road running all the way to the summit — this is a short drive, not a climb. At the top, a wihan shelters Phra Phutthanirokhantarai Chaiwat Chaturathit, known locally as Phra Si Mum Mueang, “the Buddha of the four corners of the kingdom.” King Bhumibol had four identical images made and placed in four cities — Ratchaburi, Lampang, Saraburi, and Phatthalung — and this is Ratchaburi’s copy. Entry is free, daily 08:00-17:00.
The real draw for most visitors is the view rather than the shrine itself: a wide outlook over Ratchaburi’s old town, with the limestone outcrops of Khao Ngu Stone Park visible in the distance on a clear day. The hill’s newest landmark is a glass-floored skywalk built by the Ratchaburi Provincial Administration Organisation, extending out from the hillside for a 360-degree view. So far it has opened only for a trial run — 26 December 2025 to 25 January 2026, on weekends and public holidays, 08:30-17:00, free, with a shuttle up and shoe covers provided — and no permanent schedule or ticket price had been announced as of mid-2026. Check the Ratchaburi PAO’s Facebook page before making the trip up specifically for it; the hill, shrine, and viewpoint stay open regardless.
Insider Tip: Go in the late afternoon, an hour or so before sunset — the haze that sits over Ratchaburi’s flatlands during the day tends to thin out, and the light on the descent back down the hill road is worth timing for.
Watch out: Don’t confuse this with Khao Bin Cave, a genuinely cave-riddled hill elsewhere in Ratchaburi — Khao Kaen Chan itself has no caves, despite some older listings grouping the two together. What’s here is the shrine, the road, and the view.
The hill also gets local use as a short running and walking route — a roughly 2.75 km loop up and around the summit road is a known circuit among Ratchaburi residents, so expect company from local exercisers in the cooler morning and evening hours even outside the main sightseeing crowd.
- Entry: Free
- Hours: Daily 08:00-17:00

For the actual cave experience nearby, Khao Bin Cave is a separate limestone system elsewhere in the province, and Luang Pho Kaenchan at Wat Chong Lom in town adds a second, more historic Buddha image to a Ratchaburi day out. The Ratchaburi destination guide covers the rest of the town.
