Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park
อุทยานธรรมเขานาในหลวง
Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park spreads five stupas across a cluster of limestone peaks in Phanom district, connected by concrete stairways and balustraded bridges rather than a single temple building. Entry is free — donations are welcome but not required — and the site is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. This is one of the more genuinely striking stops in Surat Thani province, on the same limestone corridor that runs toward Khao Sok National Park.
A paved road climbs partway up the hill, and ordinary cars can drive most of it before the route narrows into stairs. From there, the walkways switch between concrete steps and short bridges strung between peaks, with each stupa positioned to catch a different angle over the surrounding karst hills and rice plains below. None of it is wheelchair-accessible, and the stairs are steep enough in places that they demand a reasonable level of fitness — this isn’t a stroll-up viewpoint.
Watch out: There’s little shade on the stairways once you’re above the treeline, and the climb takes real effort in the midday heat. Bring water, wear shoes with grip, and budget more time than the site’s modest size suggests.
The park’s best-known feature is a carved gateway arch — visitors call it the Buddha gate — positioned to frame the sunrise on clear mornings, when the light passes directly through the opening. It’s the shot most people come for, and it means an early departure pays off far more here than a late-afternoon visit does, though the golden hour before sunset also lights the stupas well from the west.
Insider Tip: Go before 08:00 if you can manage it. The site technically opens then, but arriving right at opening avoids both the heat and the tour groups that build through mid-morning.
- Entry: Free (donations welcome)
- Hours: Daily, 08:00–17:00
- What’s there: Five stupas across connected limestone peaks, linked by stairs and bridges, plus a sunrise-aligned gateway arch
- Access: Steep stairs above the car park; not wheelchair or mobility-scooter accessible
- Dress code: Cover shoulders and knees — this is an active religious site, not just a viewpoint
Pace yourself, dress for the climb rather than the photos, and treat it as a working religious site first — the views are the reward for taking it seriously, not a substitute for it.
