Khao Phra Phutthabat Noi
เขาพระพุทธบาทน้อย
Khao Phra Phutthabat Noi — “Little Buddha Footprint Mountain” — is a limestone hill in Kaeng Khoi district holding a smaller, quieter counterpart to Saraburi’s famous footprint shrine. The rock itself is old: a formation of shale, sandstone, and chert dated to roughly 270 million years, standing over land that’s been settled since the late Neolithic period. Entry is free, open Tuesday-Friday 10:00-17:00 and Saturday-Sunday 09:30-18:00, closed Mondays.
The footprint mark that gives the hill its name is a depression pressed into the rock face, which local belief holds was made when the Buddha’s spiritual power softened the stone. Water seeps through continuously, keeping the impression damp year-round regardless of season. Around it, the hill offers marked trails through the limestone terrain — steep enough in places to feel like light scrambling rather than a stroll — leading to viewpoints over the surrounding Pa Sak River valley. It’s a genuinely local site: the surrounding community runs forest-fire prevention work on the hillside, a sign this is an actively managed patch of forest rather than an abandoned or forgotten one.
Insider Tip: Don’t confuse this with the far larger Wat Phra Phutthabat Ratchaworamahawihan near Phra Phutthabat town — that temple gets the crowds and the annual fair; this hill gets almost none of either, which is the actual appeal if a quiet visit matters more than scale.
Watch out: The trail sections aren’t paved throughout, and parts require reasonable footing on rock rather than stairs. Wear proper shoes rather than sandals, and check the Tuesday-Sunday schedule before setting out, since it’s closed Mondays and the weekday and weekend hours differ.
Weekday mornings are the calmest time to visit, before any weekend day-trippers from Saraburi or Bangkok arrive. Bring water — there’s little shade on the more exposed trail sections, and no shop at the site itself.
