Khlong Bang Luang Community and Artist's House, Khlong Bang Luang
ชุมชนคลองบางหลวง และบ้านศิลปิน คลองบางหลวง
Khlong Bang Luang is a canal-side community in Phasi Charoen district, on Bangkok’s Thonburi side, built along a waterway that dates back to the city’s founding as Krung Thon Buri. Government officials and nobility lived along this stretch originally, giving it the old name Khlong Bang Kha Luang; today, wooden row houses on stilts line both banks, some still selling food and handicrafts to visitors walking the boardwalk, others simply occupied as homes. It’s a working neighbourhood rather than a recreated attraction, which is part of what makes the walk through it feel different from Bangkok’s more commercialised canal markets.
The centrepiece is the Artist’s House (Baan Silapin) — a Manila-style wooden building in an L-shape, built on the site of an old chedi believed to have marked one of four directional points of Wat Kamphaeng Bang Chak, a temple that no longer stands. The upper floor operates as a gallery showing paintings and photography from resident and visiting artists; downstairs sells souvenirs, postcards, and hosts hands-on craft activities — stringing bead bracelets, painting masks, and on weekends, flower arranging and natural soap-making workshops.
Insider Tip: Time your visit around 14:00 for the puppet show — a small troupe performs traditional hun lakorn lek puppet theatre several afternoons a week, though not daily, since the performers sometimes take bookings elsewhere. It’s a low-key, unhurried performance rather than a tourist spectacle, and worth checking ahead by phone if it’s the reason you’re making the trip.
Watch out: This is a genuinely quiet, low-commercialised spot — don’t expect the buzz of Amphawa or Damnoen Saduak. Some visitors arrive expecting a floating market and are surprised to find a walkable community with a gallery instead. That’s the appeal for anyone tired of crowds, but temper expectations if you’re after boat-vendor energy.
Entry to the community and the Artist’s House is free, and it’s open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. It sits within easy reach of Bangkok’s Thonburi canal network — Taling Chan district, just across the waterways, has two floating markets worth combining with a visit: Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market and Talingchan Floating Market, both busiest on weekend mornings. Getting here by longtail boat along the canal network is part of the experience — arrange one from Wang Lang or Chao Phraya pier — though a taxi via Soi Phet Kasem 28 works just as well.
