Also known as: Wat Pak Nam, Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen, Wat Pak Nam Phasi Charoen, Wat Paknam, วัดปากน้ำ

Founded in 1610 during the Ayutthaya period, Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen sits near the mouth of Khlong Phasi Charoen on the Thonburi side of Bangkok, about 8 km by road from the old city centre. The temple rose to prominence under Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro, the abbot who revived it from near-dereliction between 1916 and 1959 and established it as the origin point of the Dhammakaya meditation tradition. Two structures now dominate the 32,000 sq m compound and draw visitors from across the city: an 80-metre white stupa named Maharatchamongkhon, built in 2012, and the bronze seated Buddha Phra Buddha Dhammakaya Thepmongkhon, completed in 2021, which stands 69 metres tall and spans 40 metres across the lap — claimed as the world’s only large-scale pure-bronze Buddha of its kind.

The stupa is the real draw for most visitors. A lift carries you through five floors, each with a distinct purpose: a museum on the lower levels holds Buddhist artefacts, antique ceramics, and vintage cars donated to the temple; the upper floors house meditation halls and relics. The fifth floor stops you in your tracks: an 8-metre stupa carved entirely from green glass stands at the centre, surrounded by a painted ceiling of deep blue and violet galaxies swirling with lotus motifs — a visual representation of the cosmos as conceived in Thai Buddhist cosmology. The effect is disorienting in the best sense. The giant Buddha outside, meanwhile, is best seen at sunset when its bronze surface deepens from gold to copper.

Insider Tip: Arrive before 9 AM on a weekday — by mid-morning the stupa lift queues grow and the compound fills with school groups. The MRT Blue Line to Bang Phai Station (Exit 1) is the most straightforward route: a 10–15 minute walk through residential sois, or a 10 THB motorbike taxi if you’d rather not navigate the alleys.

Watch out: Some sources quote closing times as early as 5 PM; the reliably confirmed hours are 8:00 AM–6:00 PM, but if you’re planning to visit the upper stupa floors, aim to arrive by 5:00 PM at the latest to allow time to ascend.

Key Facts:
  • Entrance: free (donations welcome)
