Phu Fa Development Centre
ศูนย์ภูฟ้าพัฒนา
Phu Fa Development Centre sits in the mountains of Bo Kluea district, a border district of Nan that reaches toward Laos. Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn established the centre by royal initiative in 1999 to fight food insecurity in one of Thailand’s poorest, most isolated mountain districts — “Phu Fa” translates roughly to “sky mountain,” a fitting name for a research station perched above the clouds for much of the cool season.
The Forest Department allocated 1,812 rai for the project: a 600-rai demonstration and experiment zone plus plots for 127 local farming households. Walking the demonstration area shows the actual mechanics of highland development rather than a themed display — tissue-culture propagation rooms growing disease-free seedlings, terraced vegetable plots suited to cold mountain nights, mushroom cultivation sheds, and fish and frog farming ponds that give hill-tribe families a protein source beyond subsistence rice. A community food bank and medicinal-plant garden round out the working exhibits.
Insider Tip: Call ahead (08 6216 6144) if you want a staff-guided walk through the demonstration plots — self-guided visits mostly see the exterior gardens and viewpoints, while a guide unlocks explanations of the tissue-culture and processing buildings that aren’t otherwise open to browsing.
The terrace offers wide views over Bo Kluea’s folded mountain valleys, especially striking at sunrise when mist pools in the lower ridgelines — bring a jacket even in hot season, since the elevation keeps mornings cool year-round. Roads in are winding two-lane mountain routes; allow extra driving time from Nan town and avoid the route after dark if you’re not used to Thai mountain driving.
Watch out: This is a working research and farming project, not a resort — facilities are basic (a small shop, restrooms, parking), and some plots are off-limits to protect ongoing agricultural trials, so stick to marked visitor paths.
Combine the stop with the Bo Kluea rock salt wells in the same district — the centre’s highland agriculture and the valley’s centuries-old salt-mining tradition make for a fuller picture of how Bo Kluea’s communities have adapted to genuinely difficult terrain.
Produce from the demonstration plots — coffee, high-altitude vegetables, processed mushroom snacks — sells through a small shop near the entrance, and it’s a more grounded souvenir than most roadside stalls: proceeds go back into the farmer plots rather than a middleman. Given the distance and the winding drive in, this isn’t a stop to bolt onto a rushed Nan itinerary; it rewards travellers who’ve already built a full day or two around Bo Kluea’s mountains rather than those passing through on a one-night loop of the province.
