Rama IX Park

Rama IX Park is a free, 84-rai public park on the Nakhon Phanom-Tha Uthen road, opposite Wat Sawang Suwannaram at the northern edge of Nakhon Phanom town. It isn’t the large Rama IX botanical park in Bangkok that shares its name — this is a modest municipal green space built around a natural pond, open daily 08:30-16:30 with no entry fee.

History behind the name

The site began as a naturally occurring pond called Nong Saeng, ringed by small islets and Saeng trees. In 1987, the provincial governor and Nakhon Phanom’s mayor invited government offices, merchants, and residents to fund a renovation to mark King Bhumibol’s 60th birthday — his fifth 12-year cycle, a milestone traditionally marked with public works in Thailand. The park was renamed Suan Luang Ror. 9 and officially opened on 5 December 1987.

What’s actually there

This is a local park for residents, not a curated tourist garden. Expect shaded walking paths around the original pond, open lawn, and mature trees rather than themed botanical zones or elaborate water features — descriptions online sometimes borrow details from Bangkok’s much larger same-named park, which don’t apply here. Mornings bring local joggers and walkers making use of the cooler hours; families use the shaded areas for picnics later in the day.

Atmosphere and timing

Quiet and functional rather than a showcase — this is where Nakhon Phanom residents go to walk or sit by the pond, not a manicured attraction built for photographs. It’s worth a short stop if you’re already in town for Phra That Phanom or the Mekong riverside walking street, rather than a reason to visit on its own.

Insider Tip: Treat this as a five-to-fifteen-minute stop between the town’s other sights, not a half-day destination — pair it with the Mekong bicycle path nearby if you want a longer walk.

Watch out: Much of the open lawn area has little shade — visit before 9am or after 4pm to avoid the worst of the midday heat, especially in the hot season (March-May).

Rama IX Park sits in Nakhon Phanom on the Nakhon Phanom-Tha Uthen road, opposite Wat Sawang Suwannaram (map).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same Rama IX Park as the famous one in Bangkok?
No. Suan Luang Rama IX in Bangkok's Prawet district is a large botanical park of several hundred rai. This is a separate, much smaller 84-rai municipal park on the northern edge of Nakhon Phanom town — same royal dedication, different place.
Is there an entry fee?
No. It's free for both Thai and foreign visitors, open daily 08:30-16:30.
Why is it called Rama IX Park?
It began as a natural pond known locally as Nong Saeng, named for the Saeng trees ringing its small islets. In 1987, the province and townspeople funded a renovation to mark King Bhumibol's 60th birthday (his fifth 12-year cycle) and renamed it Suan Luang Ror. 9 — officially opened 5 December 1987.
What is there to do at the park?
It's a neighbourhood park built around the original pond — walking paths, shade trees, and space for morning exercise and picnics. Don't expect themed botanical gardens or large-scale attractions; it's a quiet local stop, not a destination in its own right.
How do I get there from central Nakhon Phanom?
It sits on the Nakhon Phanom-Tha Uthen road opposite Wat Sawang Suwannaram, a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride from the town centre and the Mekong riverside walking street.
