Phuket Airport (HKT) Guide: Arrivals, Transfers, Direct Flights

By Thai Holiday Guide Editorial · 8 min read ·Updated 11 May 2026

Phuket International Airport (HKT) guide. Direct flights from Doha, Dubai, Istanbul. Arrival, taxis, transfers to Patong, Kata, Karon.

Phuket International Airport (HKT) is the second-busiest airport in Thailand and the main gateway to the Andaman coast. It handles around 18 million passengers a year, with international flights making up around 60% of the traffic — significantly higher international share than any airport in Thailand outside Bangkok.

For tourists heading to Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Khao Lak, or Koh Lanta, this is the practical alternative to flying into Bangkok and connecting domestically.

Bottom line: High-season morning arrivals (Dec-Feb, 07:00-12:00) routinely hit 60-90 minute immigration queues at Phuket. Pre-book Klook VIP fast-track ($42) before you fly, and pair with a private transfer to Patong/Kata ($22+) — Grab supply at HKT is famously unreliable.

Airlines and direct routes

Direct international flights to Phuket

  • Gulf carriers: Qatar Airways (Doha), Emirates (Dubai), Etihad (Abu Dhabi)
  • European hub: Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) — the only direct European routing
  • Russia: Aeroflot (seasonal), Pobeda — direct from Moscow
  • China: Air China, China Southern, Hainan — multiple Chinese cities
  • Korea: Korean Air, Jin Air — direct from Seoul
  • Japan: None — connect via Bangkok
  • Taiwan: EVA Air — direct from Taipei (seasonal)
  • Australia: Jetstar (seasonal), AirAsia X — direct from Perth and Sydney
  • India: IndiGo, SpiceJet — Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore
  • Singapore: Scoot, Singapore Airlines — direct from Changi

No direct flights to Phuket from Europe (outside Turkey) or the US. Most European travelers connect through Bangkok or Istanbul. Most US travelers connect through Bangkok, Doha, Dubai, or Singapore.

Domestic flights

  • AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air — Bangkok DMK to HKT (cheapest, 800-1,500 THB)
  • Bangkok Airways, Thai Smile — Bangkok BKK to HKT (full-service, 1,800-3,200 THB)
  • AirAsiaChiang Mai to HKT direct
  • Bangkok AirwaysKoh Samui to HKT direct (the Andaman-Gulf island hop)

For US/Europe travelers flying via Bangkok, see our flights to Thailand guide for the cheapest connecting fares.

Direct to Phuket vs via Bangkok

Pros
  • Direct saves 5-8 hours of layover + transfer time
  • Single ticket = if delayed, your onward leg is the airline’s responsibility
  • No domestic connection means no risk of missing the second flight
  • Fewer chances for baggage to get lost or delayed
  • Better suited to longer Phuket-focused stays (10+ days)
Cons
  • Direct Phuket fares are typically 20-40% more than Bangkok-only return
  • Limited choice of carrier — mostly Gulf, Turkish, or Asian regional
  • Skipping Bangkok means missing Thailand’s biggest city if you’ve never been
  • Some direct services are seasonal (Aeroflot, Jetstar) — check dates carefully
  • Internal Bangkok-Phuket flight is only 1 hour and costs 800-1,500 THB

Real-world example: London to Phuket return on Turkish Airlines via Istanbul: typically £600-900. London to Bangkok return on the same carrier: £450-700. Bangkok-Phuket internal on AirAsia: £25-50. Total via Bangkok: £475-750 — usually £100-150 less than direct, plus a couple of days in Bangkok if you want them.

Insider Tip: If you’re going to Phuket only, with no Bangkok plans, the time saving of a direct flight is genuinely worth £100. If Bangkok is part of your trip OR you’re price-sensitive, fly into BKK and add the internal connection.

Arrival sequence

Phuket’s terminals are simpler than Suvarnabhumi but the layout catches some people out.

Terminal 1 — International (where you’ll arrive)

  1. Gate to immigration — 5-10 minute walk after deplaning. Phuket is small enough that signs are obvious.
  2. Immigration — typically 15-40 minutes. Faster than Bangkok during off-peak times but the morning rush (07:00-10:00) sees long queues when multiple long-haul flights land together. Same TDAC requirements as BKK — have your QR code ready.
  3. Baggage claim — bags appear within 20-30 minutes of landing.
  4. Customs — green channel, usually unstaffed.
  5. Arrivals hall — SIM card counters (AIS, TRUE), ATMs (Bangkok Bank, Krungsri), currency exchange (skip these — ATMs give better rates).

Skip the queue: Phuket VIP fast-track Klook Phuket VIP fast-track from $42 — staff meet you at the aircraft door and walk you through the Premium Immigration Lane. December-March mornings the regular queue routinely runs 60-90 minutes; fast-track gets you to baggage claim in 10. Book on Klook →

The Phuket taxi situation: Unlike Bangkok where Grab is dominant, Phuket’s taxi operators have lobbied hard to keep ride-hailing apps marginal. Grab works but supply is limited — expect 10-30 minute waits and occasional pickup hassles. The official airport taxi counter on Level 1 is supervised and uses fixed zone pricing. For most arrivals it’s the simplest option.

Pre-book it: Phuket private transfer Klook Phuket private transfer from $22 (4.5★, 7,500+ reviews) — your driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. No taxi queue, no rate disputes, no Grab roulette. Fixed price to Patong, Kata, Karon or any Phuket beach. Book on Klook →

Onward travel from Phuket airport

Many travelers fly into Phuket but don’t actually stay on the island — they push on to Krabi, Phi Phi, or Khao Lak.

  • To Phi Phi Don / Phi Phi Leh — Take a taxi to Rassada Pier (45 min, 800 THB) then a ferry (90 min, 400-800 THB). Allow a full half-day if your flight lands in the morning. Book ferry tickets on 12Go.
  • To Krabi / Ao Nang — Direct mini-van from Phuket airport via the Sarasin Bridge, 2.5-3 hours, 600-800 THB. Or fly from BKK direct to Krabi instead — sometimes cheaper than the Phuket-Krabi mini-van.
  • To Khao Lak — Northbound, the closest major destination to Phuket airport. 90 minutes, 1,000-1,500 THB by taxi.
  • To Koh Lanta — Phuket to Krabi to Koh Lanta ferry. Full-day journey, easier to fly Phuket-Trang or take the direct Phuket-Koh Lanta speedboat in high season (Nov-May).
  • To Koh Yao Yai / Koh Yao Noi — Bang Rong Pier (40 min from airport, 600 THB) then speedboat (30-45 min, 400-600 THB).

Watch out: Don’t book the mini-van to Krabi from a tout in the arrivals hall — it’s typically 1,000+ THB for what should be 600-800 THB via official counters or pre-booked online. Use the airport’s official transport desk on Level 1.

Departure tips

Phuket’s departure side gets busy in the morning (06:00-09:00) and afternoon (15:00-18:00) when most international flights leave. Two things worth knowing:

  • Check-in opens 3 hours before flights, closes 1 hour before. For peak departure windows, arrive 2.5 hours ahead — the international check-in queue can hit 45 minutes.
  • The airside food/drink offering is limited. Eat before you check in, or get a meal in the lounge if you have access. The post-security shops are small.

Insider Tip: Phuket’s high-season departure queues for security can hit 30-45 min. If you have an early-morning international flight in December-March, the Klook fast-track departure service is worth booking — you’ll cut 30 min off your journey to the gate.

Fast-track and lounges

Several fast-track services are available for arrivals and departures — see our fast-track guide for current options including Miracle First Class, Coral Lounge, and the Plaza Premium offering.

Before you fly: connectivity and money

  • Thailand eSIM — Activate before you land. The Phuket SIM counter queue can be longer than Bangkok in high season. Best eSIM options.
  • Travel insurance — Required for the TDAC. Motorbike-inclusive policies matter on Phuket. Insurance comparison.
  • THB on arrival — ATMs at the airport charge 220 THB withdrawal fee. Take out 20,000-30,000 to minimize repeat fees. Money in Thailand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there direct flights to Phuket from Europe or the US?

Direct from the Gulf (Qatar via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Etihad via Abu Dhabi) and from Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). No direct flights from any European city to Phuket — all European routes connect through Bangkok or a Gulf hub. No direct flights from the US.

How far is Phuket airport from Patong, Kata, or Karon?

Phuket airport (HKT) is at the north end of the island. To the main beach resorts — Patong 40 minutes, Kata/Karon 50 minutes, Surin/Bang Tao 25 minutes, Old Phuket Town 35 minutes. Plan for longer in high season (December-February) when island traffic doubles journey times.

How much is a taxi from Phuket airport to Patong?

800-1,200 THB at the official metered counter on Level 1, fixed-price by zone. Grab availability at Phuket is limited (local taxi operators have lobbied against it), so the airport metered taxi is usually your cleanest option. Allow 800 THB for Patong, 900 for Kata/Karon, 600-700 for the north beaches.

Is there a public bus from Phuket airport?

Yes — the Phuket Smart Bus from outside Terminal 1 runs to Rawai via Patong, Kata, and Karon. 100-170 THB depending on stop, every 90 minutes, journey 1.5-3 hours depending on destination. Slow but a fraction of taxi cost.

Can I use Grab at Phuket airport?

Yes, but availability is unreliable. Local taxi operators have resisted ride-hailing, so Grab drivers are scarce especially in the evening. Allow 15-30 minutes for a Grab match, or use the metered taxi counter on Level 1 if you have luggage and limited time.

How long is a Phuket airport connection to a domestic flight?

Phuket Airport has separate international (Terminal 1) and domestic (Terminal 1, separate concourse) check-in. Allow 90 minutes minimum between an international landing and a domestic departure — Phuket immigration is faster than Bangkok but the walk between concourses is 10-15 minutes plus a short bus transfer.
