Tham Lod is a river cave near Soppong (Pang Mapha) in Mae Hong Son, one of northern Thailand’s most impressive caves and an easy day trip from Pai. A stream runs straight through the mountain, so you cross the cave partly by bamboo raft, following a lamp-carrying guide past big stalactite chambers and a cave of ancient teak coffins. Guides are mandatory (150 THB, lamp included); add a sanctuary entry fee of around 200 THB and 400 THB for a raft shared by up to three.

What the visit is like

You start at the entrance, where guides wait with gas lamps — you can’t go in without one. A stream cuts through the base of the hill, so the route in and out is partly poled along on a bamboo raft, stepping off to climb up into the chambers. There are three main caverns of stalactites and stalagmites, some joined into columns over millennia, and the “Coffin Cave,” where prehistoric carved teak log-coffins were found. The showpiece is at dusk: vast flocks of swifts spiral in to roost as bats stream out, a genuine spectacle if you stay for it.

Insider Tip: Time your visit for late afternoon so you’re finishing around dusk — the swift-and-bat changeover at the cave mouth is the moment most people remember, and the light for photos is best then too.

Getting there and costs

Tham Lod is about 8 km from Soppong, roughly halfway between Pai and Mae Hong Son town, so most visitors come on a Pai day trip (often paired with hot springs and viewpoints). The costs are split: sanctuary entry (~200 THB), the compulsory guide (150 THB), and the bamboo raft (400 THB for up to three), which is why going as a small group keeps the raft cheap per head. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.

Watch out: The cave floor is wet, uneven and dimly lit — wear shoes with grip, not sandals, and watch your head in the low passages. In the rainy season the water level rises and some chambers may be closed.

Pair it with the geothermal pools at Tha Pai Hot Springs on the way back to Pai.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to visit Tham Lod Cave?
You pay a wildlife-sanctuary entry fee (around 200 THB), a mandatory guide (150 THB, lamp included) and, to go through the cave, a bamboo raft (400 THB for up to three people). Split between three, the raft works out cheaply per person.
Do you need a guide?
Yes — guides are compulsory and carry the gas lamp that lights the cave. You can't go in alone. Guides wait at the entrance; you don't need to book ahead.
What's the bamboo-raft part?
A stream runs straight through the mountain, so the way through the cave is partly by bamboo raft. Your guide poles you along the water and you step off to climb up to the chambers and see the formations by lamplight.
What's inside the cave?
Three main chambers of stalactites and stalagmites, and a "Coffin Cave" holding ancient carved teak log-coffins. At dusk, huge flocks of swifts pour into the cave to roost while bats stream out — a highlight if you time it right.
When is the best time to go, and how long does it take?
The cool, dry season (November–February) is best; in the rainy months the water rises and some chambers can be closed off. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the full visit with the raft.
