Tours & tickets

Wat Nong Bua stands in Pa Kha, a Tai Lue village in Nan’s Tha Wang Pha district, roughly 30-40 minutes north of Nan town. Built in 1862 by Kru Ba Luang Sunanta and local villagers, the wooden wihan (assembly hall) is a rare surviving example of Lanna-Tai Lue temple architecture. Entry is free and it’s open daily 07:00-17:00.

Hook

The wihan’s interior murals are the reason to detour here — 19th-century paintings that mix conventional Buddhist scenes with steamboats and foreign soldiers, imagery that dates the work to the period Thailand first encountered Western steam technology under King Rama IV or V. The style is linked to the same tradition behind Wat Phumin’s better-known murals in Nan town, but almost nobody visiting Nan makes the trip out to see this version.

Experience

The wihan itself is compact and built from wood rather than the brick-and-stucco more common further south — worth noting even before you look at the murals. Inside, the paintings run along the walls in narrow bands: religious scenes closer to the Buddha image, everyday and historical scenes with figures in period dress further out. Behind the temple, a small cultural centre run by the village displays hand-woven Tai Lue textiles and household tools, a reminder that Pa Kha is a living Tai Lue community, not a museum village built for visitors.

Atmosphere & Timing

This sees a fraction of the foot traffic that Wat Phumin gets in Nan town — expect to have the wihan largely to yourself outside of Thai holidays. There’s little shade around the grounds, so early morning or late afternoon are more comfortable for walking the temple compound.

Insider Tip: Pair this with Wat Phumin and the National Museum of Nan on the same day — seeing both mural traditions together makes the comparison, and the drive between Nan town and Tha Wang Pha is straightforward.

Watch out: Don’t confuse this with other temples named “Wat Nong Bua” elsewhere in Thailand (there’s a well-known one in Ubon Ratchathani) — facts and reviews for those don’t apply here.

Practical

Key Facts:

The temple is easiest to combine with a day trip north through Tha Wang Pha rather than a standalone visit from Nan town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wat Nong Bua free to enter?
Yes — there's no admission charge. It's open daily 07:00-17:00.
What makes Wat Nong Bua's murals unusual?
Alongside standard Buddhist scenes, the wihan's murals depict steamboats and foreign soldiers — imagery that reflects the era they were painted, around the reigns of King Rama IV or V, when Thailand was first encountering Western steam technology.
Is this the same as the famous murals at Wat Phumin?
No, but they're linked — Wat Nong Bua's murals are attributed to the same painting tradition as [Wat Phumin](/attraction/wat-phumin/) in Nan town, home to the more widely reproduced "whispering" mural. Nong Bua's are less famous and see far fewer visitors.
How far is Wat Nong Bua from Nan town?
It's in Pa Kha subdistrict, Tha Wang Pha district — roughly 30-40 minutes north of central Nan town by car or motorbike.
Is there anything else to see nearby?
A small cultural centre behind the temple displays hand-woven Tai Lue textiles and local household tools from the surrounding village.
