Suphan Buri Thai Traditional Arts Training Center
ศูนย์ฝึกอบรมช่างสิบหมู่สุพรรณบุรี
The Suphan Buri Thai Traditional Arts Training Center is a working school, not a museum — the Fine Arts Department runs it to train students in Chang Sip Mu, Thailand’s ten traditional craft disciplines, and the public can walk in and watch for free, daily from 09:00 to 17:00.
Those ten disciplines cover painting, sculpture, lacquerwork, carving, engraving, metal casting, puppet and mask-making, metal repoussé, stucco work, and wood turning — the full spread of skills that historically went into building and decorating a Thai temple or royal building. On a good day you might see a student layering lacquer onto a panel, another carving a wooden figure, or an instructor demonstrating gold-leaf gilding technique. What’s actually happening on any given visit depends on the academic calendar and which craft groups have classes running, so it’s worth calling ahead (the centre’s number is on file with tourism listings) if you want to check before making the trip.
That unpredictability is the honest trade-off of visiting a genuine training facility instead of a tourist-oriented craft show: there’s no guaranteed circuit of every discipline in action, no English commentary, and the atmosphere is closer to a technical college than an attraction built for visitors. What you do get is real — students and instructors working at their own pace, tools and half-finished pieces left out between sessions, none of it staged.
Watch out: This isn’t set up with English signage or visitor guides, and staff may not speak much English — bring a translation app, or visit with someone who reads Thai if you want context on what you’re seeing.
Insider Tip: Weekday mornings during the academic term give you the best chance of catching multiple craft groups actively working; school holidays and weekends are hit or miss.
The centre sits on Malaiman Road in Suphan Buri, opposite the Provincial Physical Education College and next to the provincial stadium, a short songthaew or taxi ride from the town centre. Pair it with the National Museum, Suphan Buri for the historical context behind the crafts, or extend the day with the wooden shophouses at Sam Chuk Old Market.
