Highlights

  • A morning with the elephants is an eye-opening and inspiring experience

The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary was the first ethical elephant sanctuary on the island and remains one of the few places in Thailand where you don’t ride, bathe or pose with the elephants. Across 30 acres of land bordering Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, retired and rescued elephants roam, eat and socialise at their own pace, and visitors watch from a canopy walkway and from viewing platforms. National Geographic, Lonely Planet and The Guardian have all covered the approach.

The morning runs around three and a half hours. You arrive at the office in Paklok 30 minutes before the program if you’ve chosen program-only, or a bit earlier if transfers are included from your hotel. An educational video sets context on the history of elephants in Thailand’s logging and tourism industries, then a guide walks you through the sanctuary’s raised walkway where you observe elephants feeding, dust-bathing and socialising from above. Welcome snacks and beverages start the day; a lunch follows later. Socks, boots, umbrellas, raincoats and mosquito spray are all provided, which sounds over-prepared until you’re walking through rainforest edge in August.

Groups cap at 10 people, so the experience never feels like a queue. The rescued elephants have often been through decades of logging or trekking camps and carry visible scars; the staff talk openly about each one’s history. You will not touch, wash or ride them, which is the whole point. If you were hoping for a bathing photo, this isn’t that sanctuary.

Phuket’s wet season (May to October) brings heavier rain but the canopy walkway works fine in the wet and the elephants are more active in cooler weather. Wear trousers and sleeves if mosquitoes bother you, and closed shoes for the walk. Round-trip transfers are an optional add-on worth taking if you’re not driving.

Itinerary

1

A morning with the elephants is an eye-opening and inspiring experience. Following a scenic drive along a local village you will arrive at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary, a picturesque jungle dotted with ponds, wide open fields and hillsides for the elephants to roam around. Your visit starts at our Tree Top Lounge, where we will show you a presentation and educational video to prepare you for your encounter with the elephants, and to help you understand why they need to be protected. We then follow them down into the jungle. By keeping a safe distance and watching them from our Observation Salas, the elephants have the freedom to express their natural behavior, from bathing and playing in our pond to socializing with each other. The program ends with a delicious Thai vegetarian meal.
