Hat Hua Hin runs a few kilometres along the Hua Hin waterfront, from the pier and town centre south past the Hilton and Sofitel toward Khao Takiap. The sand is firm and tan-to-grey rather than the powder-white of the southern islands — a sediment difference, not a quality problem — and it’s compact enough for a proper beach walk or run at low tide. The water sits on the Gulf of Thailand side, so it stays calmer than the Andaman coast, with a gentle slope that suits families and weak swimmers more than surfers.
Horse riding is the beach’s signature activity, with handlers working the sand daily, typically in the cooler morning and late-afternoon hours. Expect to pay around 400 THB for 20 minutes, 500 THB for 30, or 1,000 THB for a full hour — agree the price before mounting, since rates aren’t fixed. Beach chairs and umbrellas rent by the day from vendors spaced along the sand, and grilled seafood and fresh coconut stalls set up close to the main access points near the pier. Kites are common on breezy afternoons, and rocky outcrops break up a few short stretches of the sand rather than running the full length.
Insider Tip: The stretch nearest Khao Takiap at the south end sees far fewer vendors and sunbathers than the town-centre section — walk 15-20 minutes south from the pier for open sand with a clear view of the mountain and the Buddha statue on top.
Watch out: Jellyfish turn up on this coast occasionally, more often during the rainy season from around August to December. Look for warning signs or vinegar stations near the lifeguard points, and avoid swimming if you see either.
- Entry: Free — pay only for chairs, horse rides, or food
- Sand type: Firm, tan-to-grey (not white powder sand)
- Horse riding: ~400 THB/20min, 500 THB/30min, 1,000 THB/hour
- Water: Gulf of Thailand — calm, minimal surf, occasional jellyfish Aug-Dec
- Best time: November-February for the driest, coolest weather
The beach sits an easy walk from Hua Hin Railway Station and the town’s night markets, so it works as a half-day stop rather than requiring a special trip. For a viewpoint over the whole bay, climb Khao Takiap at the southern end.
