Ayutthaya Summer Palace and Temples Day Tour from Bangkok
Availability checked
Ayutthaya’s temple ruins and the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace usually need separate visits, but this nine-hour day trip from Bangkok links them in one loop — pickup at Central World’s Hug Thai Zone with meeting 15 minutes before departure, air-conditioned vehicle, and entrance tickets to all four sites included.
Bang Pa-In comes first on most itineraries — the royal summer retreat south of Ayutthaya proper, a blend of Thai pavilions, a Versailles-style throne hall, and a Gothic-revival chapel that’s genuinely bizarre in context. From there it’s into the old capital itself, working through Wat Mahathat (the famous Buddha head tangled in the bodhi tree roots), Wat Yai Chaimongkhon (the massive chedi flanked by a long row of seated Buddhas you can photograph end-on), and Wat Chaiwatthanaram (the riverside Khmer-influenced temple that looks best in late-afternoon light). Refreshments, bottled water, and insurance come with the vehicle. Having the entrance tickets pre-purchased saves queuing at each site.
Lunch isn’t included — the guide usually points you to a local spot en route, and 200-300 THB covers a solid meal — and tips are discretionary. Temple dress code applies: shoulders and knees covered, scarves and long trousers or skirts work. Nine hours is a reasonable pace rather than rushed, and the route is efficient because all four sites are along roughly the same corridor. First-time visitors get more context from having the guide on site than from self-driving. The late-afternoon return timing means you’ll pass Wat Chaiwatthanaram in good light, which is what most photographers come for. Comfortable shoes for lots of walking on uneven brick.

This is the most iconic building in the palace, often referred to as the "Royal Pavilion." Built in Thai-style, it stands beautifully in the middle of a serene pond. Travelers will admire the grand structure, which once served as a royal retreat. Visitors can take photos, walk around the area, and enjoy the peaceful scenery that enhances the atmosphere of royalty.
Stop
The towering chedi (stupa) at Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is another standout feature of the temple. Standing at 62 meters tall, it is one of the tallest structures in the Ayutthaya ruins. The chedi is covered in golden fabric and features a circular base that leads to a large, conical spire. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top of the chedi to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area, including other temple ruins and the lush greenery of the region.
Stop
Iconic Buddha Head: The famous Buddha head entwined in tree roots is one of the most photographed and symbolic features of the temple, representing the passage of time and nature reclaiming human creations.
