Krasae Cave

Krasae Cave sits directly beneath the Wang Pho railway viaduct in Kanchanaburi, about 55 km from town along the Death Railway line to Nam Tok. A Buddha image and shrine occupy the cave mouth, set into limestone cliffs above the Khwae Noi River — a site that’s both an active place of worship and a marker of one of the Thai-Burma Railway’s hardest-built sections.
The cave was used to shelter Allied prisoners of war and conscripted Asian labourers during construction of the adjacent viaduct in 1943, work carried out under wartime Japanese command with severe hardship and significant loss of life. That history sits quietly alongside the shrine today — locals leave incense and flowers at the Buddha image, and the cave functions as an active place of worship rather than a preserved memorial site in itself. For the fuller wartime story, Hell Fire Pass Memorial Museum further along the line covers it in more depth.
Two trains a day from Bangkok’s Thonburi station, via Kanchanaburi, still cross the viaduct just outside the cave — a slow, deliberate crossing along the wooden trestle that’s the reason most visitors time their trip around a specific departure. Passengers can get off at Tham Krasae station, walk the platform section of track for river views, then duck into the cave itself for the shade and the shrine.
Insider Tip: the train slows almost to walking pace on the viaduct itself, giving a longer window for photos from the carriage than most visitors expect — no need to rush to a window seat.
Watch out: the cave is free, but stalls and touts near the entrance sell offerings and souvenirs at tourist prices — bargain or bring your own incense if that matters to you.
Most visitors combine the stop with the rest of the Death Railway line — the Bridge Over the River Kwai back in Kanchanaburi town, and Sai Yok Noi Waterfall a short drive further along Route 323. Doing the full loop by train and road in one day is a common day-trip pattern from Bangkok, though it makes for a long day given the travel time each way.
