Mae Kuang Udom Thara Dam
เขื่อนแม่กวงอุดมธารา
Mae Kuang Udom Thara Dam is a working reservoir in Doi Saket district, about 30 km northeast of Chiang Mai city — roughly a 30-minute drive with no direct public bus route, so you’ll need a motorbike, car, or taxi. Entry is free, parking is free, and the gates are open daily from 06:00 to 18:00.
- Entry fee: Free
- Hours: Daily 06:00–18:00
- Location: Doi Saket district, Luang Nuea subdistrict, about 30 km from Chiang Mai city
- Main draw: Suspension footbridge over the reservoir, lakeside fish restaurants
- Best months: November–February for cool-season camping and clearer water views
The reservoir itself is a straightforward irrigation dam rather than a manicured tourist park, and most visitors come for one specific thing: a suspension footbridge strung across a narrow section of the water, popular for photos with the hills behind it. A handful of small eateries sit along the shoreline near the bridge, including two dedicated fish restaurants serving tilapia and other freshwater catch pulled straight from the reservoir. On weekends, rental operators set up kayaks and paddleboards near the main access points, and it’s possible to hire a longtail boat to explore the reservoir’s back sections, where a few small resorts and treehouse-style stays have opened in recent years.
Insider Tip: Go on a weekday morning. Weekends bring Chiang Mai families out for picnics and bridge photos, and the small parking areas fill up fast — arrive after 9 AM on a Saturday and you may be circling for a spot.
Cool season (November through February) is the most comfortable window, with camping set up along parts of the shoreline and daytime temperatures that make sitting by the water pleasant rather than punishing. Come April or May and the reservoir level can drop noticeably depending on that year’s rainfall, which thins out the kayaking options. There’s limited shade around most of the open banks, so sun protection matters more than you’d expect for what looks like a shaded lakeside spot in photos.
Watch out: This is a functioning irrigation dam, not a swimming beach — treat the deeper water near the spillway with caution and stick to areas where rental operators are actively supervising activities.
If you’re doing a Doi Saket loop, Mae Takhrai National Park and the Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Center are both within the same district and easy to combine with a stop here.
