Queen Mother's Birthday & Mother's Day 2026: Thailand's Blue Celebration
August 12 is Queen Mother Sirikit’s birthday and Thailand’s official Mother’s Day — a public holiday when the entire country turns blue. The colour is associated with Friday, the day Queen Mother Sirikit was born, following the Thai tradition of assigning colours to days of the week. In the days surrounding the holiday, Thais wear blue shirts, buildings are draped in blue bunting and lights, and portraits of the Queen Mother appear on streets, overpasses, and in shopping malls.
The day is fundamentally about honouring mothers. Thai children present their mothers with jasmine garlands (malai) — jasmine symbolises the purity and sweetness of a mother’s love. Schools hold ceremonies in the days before, where students kneel and offer garlands to their mothers on stage. Merit-making ceremonies take place at temples nationwide, with families visiting together to offer food to monks and pray for their mothers’ health and longevity. Government buildings in Bangkok and provincial capitals hold formal ceremonies featuring speeches, songs, and candlelit tributes.
For visitors, the holiday is a window into Thai family values and the deep reverence for the monarchy that shapes public life. The most visible effect is the blue illumination — major landmarks like the Grand Palace, Democracy Monument, and CentralWorld shopping centre are lit in blue. Some businesses and restaurants offer special promotions. Banks, government offices, and some shops close for the day, though tourist areas, malls, and most restaurants remain open.
There is no alcohol ban on this day, unlike Buddhist holidays. If you are in Thailand on August 12, wearing something blue is a respectful gesture that Thais genuinely appreciate. The candlelit evening ceremonies at Sanam Luang in Bangkok are worth attending — arrive by 6 PM. Otherwise, treat it as a quieter day for sightseeing, as many attractions will be less crowded with Thai families gathered at home or temples.
